The Walking Pilgrim: Roll Your Own Route Map

Although I have set up some predefined route groups, you can use my database/program to combine routes in any way you please, though note that Google has a limit of 100 points and if you exceed this will either display an error or simply not display the excess points.

  1. find the id for the routes you wish to map; this is given at the bottom of the respective route details page
  2. use the URL http://pilgrim.peterrobins.co.uk/routes/map/
  3. add a comma-separated list of the route ids; for example, http://pilgrim.peterrobins.co.uk/routes/map/tours,navarro,frances will display the Tours-Santiago route
  4. optionally, add a slash followed by a map-size in pixels; for example, http://pilgrim.peterrobins.co.uk/routes/map/tours,navarro,frances/500x500 will display the same map in a 500x500 pixel image rather than the default 300x300 (maximum size = 640x640)
The URL will create a page with the map as an image; the image URL is the URL submitted to Google's static maps API. You can save the image for your own purposes (put it on your website, pin it on the wall, print it on a T-shirt . . .) or save the image URL and/or change it in any way you wish, for example, change the colours. See Google's documentation for the API definition.

Note that the basic cartographical info on these maps is subject to copyright. Basically, you can use them for your own purposes, but must get a licence from the copyright holder for any commercial use. I make no claims for original thought for the route points, which are all public domain; they are rather laborious to set up, so should you want to buy me a beer, I don't expect I'll object.
